Genus: Rhododendron 'Pink Ruffles'
Common Name: Pink Ruffle Azalea
Description: Pink Ruffle Azalea is a very attractive mid sized Azalea shrub with beautiful medium green evergreen foliage, and a huge explosion of 3" diameter light violet pink colored blooms. Blooms are superb throughout the spring, but Pink Ruffle is also well known to re-bloom again ( though not as heavily ) again in the fall. The big distinguishing feature that we feel sets the Pink Ruffle Azalea apart from most other pink tone Azaleas is the frilly "ruffled" edges all over each & every bloom. Very formal, elegant looking blooms indeed. Newer foliage growth is very bright green, and matures into a slightly darker shade of green......providing a good contrast & background for the multitude of brightly colored blooms of this hybrid Azalea variety.
Bloom Time: Spring
Size: 2-4 ft high x 2-4 ft wide
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
Exposure: Partial to Mostly Sh
Hardiness: Zone 7b - 10
Soil: Average to cool moist, fertile
Uses: Popular uses for Pink Ruffle include foundation plantings, colorful accents or borders, and also works very well in container gardening. Have even seen this variety used as an understory planting under the shady canopies of larger shade trees. Like all Azaleas, Pink Ruffle prefers semi shade, and will even do well in planting locations with mostly shade. Shallow, non aggressive root system makes them a great foundation planting choice, and can even be planted closely together for use as a colorful hedge. This fairly shallow root system however, also requires that Azaleas be given regular waterings - be sure that your Azaleas receive water equivalent to about 1" of rainfall each & every week throughout the growing season.
